As a lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, I seem to be under the spell of marine air and reflection of light on water.

I have always loved color, mark-making, and juicy paint. I work vigorously at a large scale in oil, pastel, and charcoal, using a range of tools: big flat brushes, smaller ones, palette knives, sticks, rags, and fingers.

The paintings are about what is felt as much as what is seen. They are inspired by movement and color. I add, subtract, build, obliterate, and finally arrive where layered fragments take form as a whole. I’m attentive to intangibles: breath, tension, emotion, response. The freshness of drawing keeps mark-making at the heart of the work – it’s where the pressure, speed, and impulse of my hand show up. I search with kindness for beauty that is primal rather than perfect.

With abstract art, people might wonder if they see what the artist intended. My paintings have no limits to interpretation. My aim is to create art that is open, airy, welcoming — ready for the viewer to come in.
